ASHEVILLE, NC: MORE THAN JUST MOUNTAINS (BUT SERIOUSLY, THOSE BLUE RIDGES…)
Many years ago, my first encounter with Asheville was a quick visit to the magnificent Biltmore Estate. While undeniably grand, I had barely scratched the surface of this mountain city. So, when life recently offered me the chance to spend two glorious weeks immersing myself in Asheville’s vibrant spirit, I jumped at the opportunity. This time it felt like a whole new adventure and one that left me absolutely in love and longing for more! I truly didn’t want to leave.
Falling for the Blue Ridge: Parkway Drives and Mountain Views
The undeniable star of this trip was falling head over heels in love (and I truly mean IN LOVE) with the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their majestic peaks, cloaked in that iconic misty blue was a breathtaking backdrop to nearly every moment. I’ve always been drawn to the mountains and specifically the Berkshires, but this trip solidified my love runs deeper than that. I feel at home and my best self with that mountain air. I spent hours cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway, “America’s Favorite Drive” and national treasure if you ask me. The winding roads, panoramic overlooks, and fresh mountain air were pure bliss. I sadly missed out on some parts of the Parkway because they were closed from the devastation from Hurricane Helene. However, they are scheduled to reopen in Fall of 2025!
Because of the closures, I was redirected to the Pisgah Loop Scenic Byway and man…I am glad. You’re enveloped into the woods and navigating the windiest road I’ve ever driven on. Paired with my Mountain Life playlist was absolute perfection. You must stop at the Pisgah Inn, perched right on the Parkway with jaw-dropping views. It’s the perfect spot to grab a bite and simply gaze out at the endless rolling mountains. They have rocking chairs lining the view where you can enjoy some refreshments and chat with fellow mountain visitors. My exploring took me to the stunning Looking Glass Falls. The power and beauty of the waterfall were captivating. While you can get in the water at the Falls, I personally didn’t. I had chatted with a local that talked about how contaminated the local water has been since the Hurricane, so I avoided it all together.

I couldn’t stop chasing those mountain views, so I headed to Lookout Observatory, which offered incredible views, and for a dose of luxury, I headed to the Omni Grove Park Inn and Spa. The resort’s grand architecture and sprawling grounds are impressive enough, but combine that with the stunning mountain backdrop and the undeniable “vibes,” and you’ve got a perfect evening escape.

Culinary Delights & Artistic Expressions
Asheville’s culinary scene is as vibrant and diverse as the landscape. I indulged in some fantastic regional cuisine, like elk and quail at the Red Stag Grill, which is inside the Grand Bohemian Hotel. For a more laid-back vibe, pop over to Biscuit Head, which is an absolute must-visit with their fluffy biscuits and an array of homemade jams – a true breakfast or anytime dream! I am a sucker for berry jams, but their selection was a wide range from berry to apple to some with a spicy kick!

Beyond the delicious dining options, the city’s artistic pulse is palpable, especially in the River Arts District. I spent time wandering through this neighborhood, admiring the incredible murals and public art that adorned the buildings. It’s a testament to Asheville’s creative spirit. My favorite stop was the Stay Weird Silo by muralists Ishmael &Ianthepainter on Roberts Street. It almost looks like you’re not supposed to wander around, but feel free to wander through the graffiti yard.

And for the coffee lover in me, Asheville did not disappoint. Rowan Coffee and Ultra Coffee quickly became my go-to spots for expertly crafted brews. For a perfect combination of delicious eats and an ideal outdoor dining atmosphere, I can’t recommend Liberty House Coffee and Cafe enough. Their commitment to local ingredients and charming setting make for a truly memorable meal. And for those like me who appreciate the nourishing power of a good broth, Bone & Broth had a menu with bone broth on it – truly, it was for me. Don’t forget to check out All Day Darling and Farewell Coffee for more fantastic coffee and food experiences.

Restoration and Relaxation: A Must-Do Spa Experience
After all the short hikes, exploring downtown and indulging, some restoration time was much needed and I’m a sucker for self-care especially when it’s paired with nature. A visit to Shoji Spa & Retreat is an absolute MUST, and it exceeded every expectation I could have had. A Japanese inspired spa tucked into the side of a mountain, I opted for an hour soak paired with a massage, and it was hands down the best I’ve felt in months. The tranquility of the setting, nestled in the mountains, combined with the pure relaxation of the soak and skilled hands of the massage therapist, was heavenly. The complimentary sake service was a delightful touch, too! The only thing that would have made it better is being able to soak for hours because really, it’s always hard to pry me from a hot tub.

Rooftop Views and a Charming Escape to Black Mountain
To truly appreciate Asheville’s unique blend of urban charm and natural beauty, rooftop hopping is essential. From various downtown vantage points, I enjoyed incredible views of the city skyline framed by those distant Blue Ridge Mountains. You will find some of the best in hotels and I enjoyed Soprana Rooftop Cucina. You can also check out Montford Rooftop Bar, Antidote Cocktail Lounge and Golden Hour.

My Asheville experience wouldn’t have been complete without an escape to the neighboring town of Black Mountain. It’s a place where everyone I passed seemed to smile and wave hello, instantly making me feel welcome. The downtown area is wonderfully charming, perfect for a leisurely stroll with plenty of cute shops and eateries. I particularly enjoyed spending time at Peri Social House, a spot with amazing interior design and fantastic options for outdoor seating – whether you prefer a patio, porch, or cozy indoor nook, it’s a perfect place to enjoy a drink and get some work done. Bonus points if you decide to stay there! And while in Black Mountain, be sure to do the easy hike to Fonta Flora Lookout for another amazing view of those iconic blue ridges. This area has a rich history, having been home to the famed Black Mountain College (featured in the movie “The Longest Ride”), which was a huge artist colony. Asheville pays homage to this influential past with the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in its downtown.

The Grand Dame: The Biltmore Estate
And of course, no blog post about visiting Asheville would be complete without a mention of the Biltmore Estate. As I mentioned, it was my first introduction to Asheville many years ago. For those who haven’t been, it’s an absolute must-see.
The Biltmore Estate is a marvel of the Gilded Age, built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895. It remains the largest privately owned house in the United States, a stunning example of château-esque architecture. Vanderbilt, inspired by the grand estates of Europe, envisioned a self-sustaining enterprise. Today, it offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent lives of America’s elite, with its magnificent house, exquisite gardens, and a thriving winery. If you have time, explore the expansive grounds and head for a walk around the Biltmore Lagoon where you’ll find an amazing view of the Estate on the hill. I caught it right as the sky opened up and a thunderstorm rolled through – pure magic.

My two weeks in Asheville allowed me to immerse myself in its unique charm, from the majestic mountains to its artistic alleys and delicious dining. I also got to meet some locals and other travelers and really truly immerse myself in that Southern hospitality. Honestly, I needed more time and would go back in a heartbeat. This city has a way of captivating you! I’m so thankful life took me to visit there, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and relaxation.
